When you move to a different town or even state, it can be tough to upkeep a friendship with a friend that you moved away from, if you don't know what to do. I have been there, hundreds of miles away from a good friend, wanting to keep the friendship alive and well, but also not sure how to keep a friendship strong when I lived so far away.
One way to keep a friendship going strong is to keep in touch regularly. You can do this by sending them a few text messages, emails, or even handwritten letters. If you live in different time zones, make an effort to schedule regular video chats so you can catch up with each other. How often you talk or send letters is completely up to you! Some people like to catch up once a week, others like to do it once a month. I would recommend connecting at least once every 2 months, or more often if you can make it fit both or your schedules! Find what works for you and your friend.
Share what interests you and your friend! When you come across something that you think your friend would find interesting, make sure to share it with them! This can be anything from a funny article you read online to a new song that you're loving. Keeping your friend up-to-date with the little things that are going on in your life will help them feel closer to you, even if you're not physically close to each other.
Make plans to visit each other: Even if you can't visit each other as often as you'd like, making plans for the future will help keep your friendship strong. Whether it's planning a yearly weekend trip or setting a date for a facetime call, making sure you have something to look forward to together will help maintain your bond.
Do things together even when you're not together: There are plenty of ways to stay connected even when you can't be in the same place. You can watch the same movie and then discuss it afterwards, read the same book and talk about it over email or social media. Personally, my favorite is to listen to the same audio book! (Personal growth books are my FAVORITE! The 12 Traits of the Greats is where I recommend you start if you are just jumping into personal growth!) I love learning new things and having a friend who is just as excited about what was learned in the book is so fun! It even starts more conversations. "Did you get to page 37 yet? Oh my goodness, you are going to LOVE IT! I can't believe I didn't know that before!"
Keeping a friendship strong even if you live far away can be done!
