How do I stop being homesick when I move?
I was 24 years old, living in a dingy two bedroom apartment in a sketchy area and deeply homesick. I had an infant and a 3 year old at home, and as you can guess I became quickly overwhelmed without a local support system. The demands on my time were constant, but so was that tug on my heart. The longing for connection and friendship. The longing for community and some much needed support. I was deep in homesickness.

Maybe you are finding yourself in a similar situation. Living in an unfamiliar place, overwhelmed with life, longing for connection and missing back home. If you are there, this is for you. You don’t need to live in homesickness. There are many ways to pull yourself out of that pit and start enjoying life again. One thing that has helped me tremendously is learning to manage my self-talk. The words you say to yourself are extremely important and have a big influence in how you see the world and what actions you take.

Over the years I have taken many different approaches to managing my self-talk. Some were free and others were a bigger investment. One free way to help you improve your self-talk and step out of homesickness is to start moving your body. Whether at the gym, at home, or at the park, moving your body helps you learn that you are strong, capable, and even in times of adversity, when you feel like giving up, you can press on. Working out releases endorphins (natural pain relievers and stress reducers), which makes you feel better! Once you get into a good routine of moving your body, you will feel the weight of your self-talk improve, which in turn will help your homesickness get lighter. Also if you are doing a workout program with instructors, they say repeat such helpful things!

“You are strong.”

There are two things that you can control: Your attitude and your effort, so let's keep it positive and give our best.” Autumn Calabrese

“Today is another opportunity to take control and create that future that you want.” - Autumn Calabrese

So not only are you able to increase your endorphins, but you are also getting great self-talk training daily! If you are feeling “stuck” in homesickness or like you are walking through a deep fog of longing for home, then this might be just what you need to start your healing process and stop feeling homesick.

I’m cheering for you!

Oh, by the way, here are the workout programs that I use.
